shirataki noodles

Do you often find yourself craving noodles while on your weight-loss mission?  If so, you are not alone.  Since pasta and noodles are typically high in carbohydrates, they are usually not included in low-carb diet plans to help you lose weight faster than a weight-loss program that does allow for them.  However, with shirataki noodles, you will still be able to enjoy your pasta sauces and lose weight at the same time.  This is because shirataki noodles are made with konjac starch and/or tofu, both of which are very low in carbohydrates and low in calories but high in dietary fiber especially when compared to the traditional flour and/or rice bases.  Thus, the composition of shirataki noodles makes it a valuable resource to help you lose weight.

As the popularity of shirataki noodles increases, they can be more readily found at many local food shops.  Supermarkets, such as Safeway and Lucky’s, usually carry the tofu-based noodles and can come in spaghetti or fettuccine styles.  Konjac starch-based noodles can typically be found at Asian grocery stores, such as Ranch 99 or Lion’s.  Depending on the brand and type, the noodles can range from 0 to 50 calories per serving (1 cup) compared to 250 calories in pasta or 200 calories in rice noodles.

The texture of shirataki noodles are similar to that of al dente pasta.  The shirataki noodles actually come packaged in its own liquid that should be drained and rinsed before mixing with your dish of choice.  Otherwise, they come ready to eat straight from the bag and do not require any cooking.  Shirataki noodles have little taste of their own, so they can easily adapt to any flavors of sauces or soups that you add them to.  Moreover, due to their composition, shirataki noodles do not become soggy or mushy after sitting in the sauce or broths for a long time the way other pastas and noodles do.  Instead, the longer you soak the shirataki noodles, the more flavor they will absorb.  This means shirataki noodles are very convenient when you are packing lunch or meals for the entire week.

Just because you are trying to lose weight does not mean that you need to give up your noodle-based meals.  With a bit of creativity and the substitution of shirataki noodles, your meals can be just as satisfying with less overall calories.  Add the shirataki noodles to your favorite GreenLite friendly pasta sauces, soups, and stews.  You can even use shirataki noodles to make pizza!  Enjoy your favorite foods and still lose weight!
