Whether it is the Friday morning after Thanksgiving or the Monday after a weekend of a bit too much indulging, many of us have felt this way before: Ugh! Indulgent eating may leave you feeling bloated, tired, and sick. It can also leave you feeling emotionally defeated and hopeless in your efforts to lose weight. But before you decide to bury your troubles in a bag of potato chips, a tub of ice cream, or a plate of tempting leftovers, know that recovering from dietary indulgence is easier than you think – especially if you act quickly. Within 48 hours, it is possible to reboot your diet, lose weight, and reestablish positive habits by eating a protein-only diet for those two days. So, how does this work?
The two-day meal plan converts your daily carbohydrate servings into protein units. The protein-only plan is very low-carb and allows the body to use up stores of glucose while returning to a fat burning state, otherwise known as “mild ketosis.” The result of being in ketosis is that your body depletes its glucose storage and switches to fat as an energy source. This process also has a diuretic effect and, thereby, reduces water retention. The combined effect is you lose weight from both your fat masses and your water stores. However, keep in mind that this plan is not recommended for more than two days.
Here are some tips to help with the two-day protein plan:
- Include some protein choices that would be a special treat for you. This could be scallops, lobster, grilled or marinated lamb chops, filet mignon, or any other protein sources that you know will satisfy your taste buds. For vegetarians, sources of protein should come from eggs, cheese, Greek yogurt, tofu, and other soy-based products, nuts, and Seitan.
- Satisfy your sweet tooth with sugar-free treats like Jello, hot chocolate, decaf-flavored coffees (like International Coffee brand), and FAGE with vanilla extract or a sugar-free sweetener.
- Drink a lot of water. It may seem counterintuitive to drink water when you are feeling bloated, but water aids digestion. It will balance your most likely high-glucose, high-sodium meals, and it also helps avoid constipation.
- Do not forget to take your multivitamins. Your body still needs its nutrients to function and maintain a healthy body.
We all have our moments whether they are from a weekend of dining out with friends or a festive holiday feast with family. However, that should not keep you from reaching your weight goals. So, if you feel like you need a reset, give the two-day protein-only plan a try, and put yourself back on track.
