And for many of us health-conscious individuals living in Silicon Valley, we’d rather opt for more natural solutions.
Dr. Sooji Rugh has been offering natural filler procedures in a practice called Bloom Wellness for several years, and we’re now opening up these services to GreenLite clients (with special discounts in place if you purchase by December 31st, 2014.)
But there are certainly questions that arise when considering this type of treatment, so we hope the following FAQ will shed more light on how the treatments currently offered at Bloom, Restylane and Perlane, actually work:
What are the benefits of treatment?
Natural fillers like Restylane and Perlane can give almost immediate results in just one treatment (some patients report seeing the most change about one week after treatment). Long-standing lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin can be eliminated, with results lasting up to about one year. Moreover, these types of fillers don’t affect facial expressions.
What are the most common areas treated?
Most areas where there is volume loss:
Nose to mouth lines (nasolabial folds), which commonly deepen as we age and we experience volume loss in our mid-face
Corners around the mouth that turn downwards toward the chin (often referred to as “marionette lines”). This effect leads to an appearance of frowning, but is a result of volume loss in the areas below the corners of the lower lips
Lips can lose volume with aging. Restylane can be injected in areas of the lips and provide a more full, youthful appearance
The area between the eyebrows (glabella lines). With repeated use of the brow muscles, these furrows can deepen and be present at rest. This area is also improved with use of Dysport or Botox, which relaxes the muscle that creates the frown lines
Cheeks and mid-face where volume loss frequently occurs, resulting in a more sunken, tired appearance
Under eye area, where volume loss can occur, contributing to shadows and “bags” below the eye.
How “natural” are the products used? Are they safe?
The fillers we use are gels that are based on stabilized hyaluronic acid – a substance that naturally exists in the body and that is an ingredient in many over-the-counter, anti-aging skincare products. It acts as a lubricant and binds water molecules to help the skin remain plump looking and hydrated.
Both Restylane and Perlane contain no animal ingredients whatsoever.
When it comes to hyaluronic acid fillers, both Restylane and Perlane have been demonstrated in numerous comprehensive studies to be both safe and effective.
What exactly does the treatment involve?
First, you will meet with Dr. Rugh in person for a basic skin assessment. Together, you will discuss your goals and the problems you would like to address with the treatment.
If time allows, you can get started with your treatment during the initial consultation. You should also avoid certain OTC medications or supplements a few days before your scheduled treatment to minimize bleeding or bruising. Pretreatment instructions are provided for you when you schedule your consultation.
A topical numbing gel is used to anesthetize the skin. The fillers are injected into the skin in small amounts using a fine needle. The treatment itself may take anywhere from 30-45 minutes from start to finish.
Are there side effects?
Most patients experience minimal side effects, which may include bruising, slight swelling, itching, pain, tenderness, or redness. Most of these symptoms will usually subside within 24-48 hours, however bruising may take 2 weeks to resolve so we recommend that you avoid scheduling within 2 weeks of any special event.
As with any skin injection procedure, there is always a slight risk for infection, but it is rare.
How long do the effects of treatments last?
Depending on your age, lifestyle, and skin type, effects of a Restylane or Perlane treatment can last anywhere from about 6 to 12 months.
Am I qualified for treatments?
While most people can benefit from these types of filler treatments, Dr. Rugh will assess your medical history and current condition to make sure you’re in good enough health to receive them.
Pregnant and breast-feeding women or individuals with certain autoimmune conditions (which would heighten risk for infection) may need special consideration before receiving these types of treatments.
If you’ve been looking for an early Christmas present to give yourself (or someone you love!), we encourage you to book a consultation before the prices for these procedures go up after the New Year.
