Family Health and Fitness Day is September 24th.  It is a great time to get the family pumped up about overall health and engage in healthy activities.  Here are a few ideas to help you get the ball rolling on Family Health and Fitness Day and beyond.

Healthiest Chef Contest: Host a healthiest chef contest.  Give family members or friends a challenge to recreate some of the unhealthiest dishes with a healthy twist.  You can make this a live competition or have people make dishes and bring them on the day of the contest.  Mix things up and add rules that involve incorporating a particular food ingredient in every dish.  This is also a great opportunity to get your neighbors in on the fun.  Activities like this will give you a great opportunity to share what you have learned on your diet plan or even inspire your friends and loved ones to start their own diet plan.

After Dinner Walks: If you are able to get your whole family around the table for dinner, then you are really doing this family thing right!  While it can be tough to get everyone at the dinner table for meals every night, that does not mean you cannot create other opportunities for family bonding.  Whether the family is all together at dinner or scattered, call the crew together for after dinner walks around the neighborhood or a local park.  This gives you a chance to bond and get some good physical activity.  Try starting this tradition on Family Health and Fitness Day and making it a weekly family activity thereafter.

Bike Riding: Take the family out for a bike ride.  If you have younger children, this is a great way to help instill the importance of working out.  It is also a great opportunity to help share and model safety tips while bike riding.  This can be done with friends, too.  Are you in biking distance to work?  If so, try biking to work once a week.

Just Dance: Dancing has to be one of the most fun ways to get aerobic exercise.  It is also a great way to involve family members, friends, or co-workers who are not all that excited about exercising.  Consider hosting a dance-off right in your own home or office.  Try incorporating popular songs that naturally make people want to dance.  The good thing about a dance-off is that there does not have to be a “winner.”  As long as everyone is having fun and moving, the goal has been accomplished.
