happiness (1)They are so many reasons to celebrate, and all of them do not involve holidays or birthdays.  One might celebrate getting out of debt, earning a degree, landing the dream job, or meeting your lose 10 pounds weight-loss goal.  With all the reasons there are to celebrate, we tend to incorporate food into each one of them.  This causes us to eat when we may not even be hungry.  The reliance on food to celebrate an accomplishment or event also influences otherwise healthy eaters to eat high-calorie and low-nutrient foods.  To avoid associating food as a reward instead of fuel for your body, try to give yourself and others a pat on the back without including food.  There are many inventive, fun, and exciting ways to recognize accomplishments without food.

Buy Yourself a New Outfit: Maybe you met your goal to lose 10 pounds or landed a new job.  Either way, your closet will need an update.

Take a Day Off: If you just completed a major project at work or finished a degree program, taking a day or two off is a wonderful way to celebrate.

Strike a Pose: A photo session is an excellent way to commemorate a special occasion, such as a graduation or family reunion.

Check Something Off of Your Bucket List: Pull out your bucket list and check off an adventure or two.  Trying something new or visiting a place you have never been to is the perfect way to celebrate huge financial milestones, like paying off student loans or a credit card debt.

Give Yourself the Spa Treatment: If you are in the mood to celebrate you, just for being you, why not give yourself the spa treatment?  Even if you can only escape to your bathroom, run a bubble bath, add candles and music, and soak away the cares of the day.

Get a Mani/Pedi: Get a few friends together and head out to a nail salon for manicures and pedicures.  This is a great option if you or a friend are celebrating a promotion on a current job or just simply making it through a rough week.

Give Back: Spread the joy of your accomplishment by giving back.  Find a place to volunteer, such as a nursing home or food bank.

Work Out: If you love your healthy lifestyle but have been so busy that you could not get in a great workout, celebrate by going for a run or taking a group class that you have been meaning to try.

We live in a culture where food is at the center of almost every form of acknowledgment.  This creates an environment where people look forward to eating until they cannot eat anymore, which is not a great place to be if your goal is to lose 10 pounds or more.  Instead, find ways to include the things you love into your most memorable moments of celebration.
