Eating healthy while traveling can be challenging.  Whether it is traveling for work, vacation time, a family outing, or another reason, it is common to fall into the travel trap.  Eating healthy on the road not only gives you peace of mind about what you are putting into your body but also helps keep you energized.  Why risk falling back into bad habits or low energy levels for bad fast food?  It is just not worth it to risk your weight-loss success.  While eating healthy on the road can seem daunting, there are steps you can take to ensure you are staying on track with your weight-loss goals.  Check out the tips and tricks below to stay away from unhealthy food while traveling.

  1. Watch Where You Stop for Food: You could easily stop at the nearest fast food restaurant to get food when you are traveling, but your choices will be limited.  Instead of opting for fast food, consider stopping at a grocery store.  Yes, it will take a few more minutes out of your time, but grocery stores will have healthier options.  Some grocery stores even have prepared food that is ready to eat, low in calories, and full of nutritious value.
  2. Pack Snacks: Keeping your body fueled will help avoid those unhealthy food choices.  If you are driving a long distance, pack a snack bag or cooler full of things, such as water, nuts, berries, and cut vegetables, such as cucumber or broccoli.  This will not only help you avoid bad food pit stops but will also help maintain your energy and focus while driving.  Take this concept to the next level and bring a backpack of snacks for a longer stay at a hotel or resort.
  3. Stay Hydrated: This is a big one!  Your body needs water!  Staying hydrated while traveling will help combat travel lag, help you eat less, and decrease junk food cravings.
  4.  Know Your Options: Before you travel, get a feel for healthy options on the way to your destination.  This includes becoming familiar with which food chains offer options that are truly good for you.  This also involves knowing what healthy options are available at better-known food locations.  Map it out if you need to.  The key to weight-loss success while traveling is to plan ahead so that you are not left without options.
